
A walk-in wardrobe finished in high-gloss, mirror-lacquered walnut is one of the least forgiving surfaces in a house to mount anything on — any visible bracket, grille lip or seam shows up doubled in the reflection. That's exactly the brief XSCACE was given for this dressing room install: sound while getting ready, with zero visual interruption to the lacquer.

Sizing the amplifier for a single-zone dressing room
A dressing room zone is typically one or two Bonsai units on a single amplifier channel pair, well within an Air Amp's 80W RMS per channel — so headroom was never the constraint here. The harder engineering problem was mechanical, not electrical: a lacquered door is a moving part (it opens), so the speaker cable run has to account for door swing and hinge clearance, routed through the door's own cavity rather than surface-run, which is part of why the shallow 12mm depth mattered as much for the cable channel as for the visible face.

Why Bonsai
At 12mm deep, Bonsai is the thinnest speaker XSCACE makes — thin enough to sit nearly flush against a lacquered panel door rather than requiring a cavity cut into it, which would have meant compromising the door's structure and finish. The champagne-toned aluminium chassis was chosen to read as an intentional design accent against the walnut rather than trying to hide, which paradoxically makes it less noticeable than a grille forced to match the wood tone.
The engineering trade-off
Bonsai's 300Hz–18kHz range is a deliberate compromise: at 12mm depth, there isn't enclosure volume for real bass extension, so the driver is tuned to do the mid-range and top end extremely well and hand off everything below 300Hz to a separate subwoofer. In a dressing room this is close to ideal — most of what's audible while getting ready is voice, streamed music's vocal and instrumental range, not sub-bass — so the compromise costs almost nothing in daily use.
The system
Bonsai is paired with an Air Amp for wireless streaming directly into the passive driver, and an Acacia 6 Powered subwoofer handles the 35Hz–300Hz band the Bonsai hands off — placed outside the wardrobe itself, in an adjacent cavity, so no low-frequency enclosure has to compete for space with hanging rails and drawers.
